Besson Scottish Solos and Ensemble Contest Set to go off this weekend

The Scottish Brass Band Association's (SBBA's) Besson Solo and Ensemble
Competition is set to take place this weekend at Howden Park Centre,
Livingston, Scotland, in association with Besson and West Lothian Council.
Approximately 40 soloists and 20 ensembles have already qualified for
Saturday¹s finals in the Junior, Intermediate and Youth sections.
Sunday sees the Open Solo and Open Ensemble sections go off, including the
Open Solo (brass or percussion), Open Slow Melody (brass), Open Ensemble
(brass or percussion) and the return of the Open Duet Section (brass), which
was first introduced last year.

The brass section adjudicators are Hedley Benson and Nigel Durno, together
with Alasdair Rankin as the adjudicator for the percussion sections.
The event is once again supported by Besson, in conjunction with West
Lothian Council through the use of the venue. In addition, Besson¹s
generosity in its leading role for the event is further reflected in their
provision of the impressive prizes of a student cornet for each of the
weekend¹s winning brass ensembles. SN Percussion is supplying,
free-of-charge, all the percussion instruments for the growing percussion
sections throughout the weekend.

The first draw for Saturday takes place at 9.30am with the competition
commencing shortly afterwards, whilst Sunday starts with the draw at 10.00am
- the Percussion Section starting at approximately 10.30am.

Said a spokesman for SBBA: "SBBA is enthusiastic to build on the success of
previous years for this event, encouraging a growth in entries for the Open
sections and through an increase in audience attendance. The Association
therefore looks forward to welcoming supporters and performers alike to this
important event for brass and percussion performance development in the
brass band calendar."
