ITEC Returns Home - with Niki Bland

The bi-annual ITEC Conference is returning to its roots in May, where a stellar cast of low brass performers will descend upon Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in the USA.

Following the rich and vibrant 2012 International Tuba / Euphonium Conference (ITEC) hosted by Linz and Besson Artist, Steven Mead, the 2014 follow-up event between 19 - 24 May is returning to its 41-year-old roots at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. With the theme, ‘Where it All Began’, the host of the ITEC 2014 is Daniel Perantoni - Provost Professor of Tuba at Indiana University, a past International Tuba and Euphonium Association ITEA) President and also the host of the first national conference when he was Professor of Music at the University of Illinois in the mid-1970s. Said Daniel: “As always, the ITEC 2014 will offer an unrivalled opportunity to see, hear and mix with great artists and ensembles presenting recitals, master classes, lectures, and panel discussions.”

Although 2014 marks the 41st year of the ITEC, the event will celebrate its first 40 years and beginnings with the first International Tuba / Euphonium Symposium organised by the late Harvey Phillips at Indiana University. Said the ITEA’s current President, Jerry Young:  “We will commemorate that first international gathering and honour the memory of the great Harvey Phillips by reviewing what we have accomplished over the past 40 years in terms of growth of repertoire, improvement of equipment and, most importantly, artistry, but we will look forward too. There will be many world premières celebrating the past, present
and future.”

The ITEA itself was founded as the Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association in the late 1960s - originally a very loosely organised club brought together by the tubist of the Montreal Symphony, Robert Ryker, now a professional conductor in Japan. In the early 1970s, a group of tubists led by Harvey Phillips started planning for a more formalised organisation, which birthed at the 1973 Symposium at Indiana University. The organisation now has more than 2,000 members worldwide and is currently experiencing significant growth.
